About Canonicle
Canonicle is a daily word-puzzle inspired by Redactle. Each day, the text of one Bible chapter is shown with most words redacted. You guess one word at a time to reveal it everywhere it appears in the passage. When you think you know which book the passage is from, name it from the list of 66. You may then try to guess the chapter to earn a higher badge.
Keeping Canonicle ad-free
Canonicle has no ads and I'd like to keep it that way. Wrapping the Word of God in banner ads feels wrong, and your time in Scripture shouldn't be interrupted to pitch products. If the game has been a blessing and you feel led to give, your support helps cover hosting and keeps the game free for everyone.
Rules
- Type a word and press Enter. Every occurrence of that word reveals.
- A short list of common words (the, of, thee, thou, โฆ) is pre-revealed and doesn't count toward your score.
- Numbers are visible. Punctuation is visible. Verse numbers are shown as small green superscripts.
- Tap "๐ Guess Book" to name the book. A wrong guess adds 15 to your score; a right guess wins.
- After winning, you may try to name the chapter. Wrong chapter guesses don't cost anything.
- Psalms and Proverbs are special โ recognizing the book isn't enough since each chapter is its own self-contained piece. You must name the chapter to win.
- Lower score is better.
Hints ๐ก
If you're stuck, the ๐ก Hint button reveals up to three clues, in order:
- Testament โ Old or New.
- Category โ broad genre such as Law, Historical accounts, Wisdom and poetic writings, Prophecy, Gospel, Letters and teachings.
- Theme โ a one-sentence description of what the book is about.
The number of hints you used is recorded alongside your final score. Using any hint limits your badge โ the top two tiers require zero hints.
Badges
Every completed puzzle awards a badge based on your score and how many hints you used.
- โ๏ธ True Berean โ Named both book and chapter (chapter on the first try) with no hints and a score of 13 or less. The Acts 17:11 standard: searching the Scriptures carefully.
- ๐๏ธ Faithful Steward โ Named both book and chapter with no hints and a score of 25 or less.
- ๐ Disciple โ Named both book and chapter using 1โ2 hints, with a score of 40 or less.
- ๐ Sojourner โ Named both book and chapter, but with a high guess score or all 3 hints used.
- ๐ฏ๏ธ Seeker โ Named the book but not the chapter. The humble, teachable believer โ still learning the way.
Forfeited games receive no badge.
Modes
- Daily โ one shared puzzle that everyone gets. Resets at CST midnight. Your streak persists across days in your browser.
- Practice โ a random chapter from the curated set. Replay anytime; no streak.
Signing in (optional)
Canonicle is fully playable without an account โ your daily progress and streak are stored in your browser. Sign in if you'd like:
- Cross-device sync โ start the daily on your phone, finish it on your laptop.
- A permanent history โ every daily you've finished is saved to your account, not just to the browser you happened to play it in.
- Stats that survive a cache clear โ streaks, badges, and best scores follow you.
You can sign in with Google or with a one-time code sent to your email. Your email address is private and is never shown on any page that someone else can see.
Sharing your profile (optional)
Each signed-in player has a profile at /u/your-username, but it stays private until
you turn it on. From the History page, choose "Share my profile" to flip it public, then
pass the link to a friend. There's no "leaderboard" โ sharing is one-on-one, an invitation to walk
this together.
What a public profile does show:
- Your display name and username
- Your stats โ played, won, current streak, longest streak, best score, average score
- How many badges of each kind you've earned
- Each daily you've finished, listed as Daily #N with your score and badge
What it doesn't show:
- Your email address
- The book or chapter for any daily โ only the daily number, so a visitor who hasn't yet played isn't spoiled
- Your individual guesses or which words you revealed
You can change your display name, pick a different username, or make your profile private again at any time from the Account page. We trust you to choose a name worthy of the One you follow โ a basic check rejects obviously offensive handles, but it's not a substitute for kindness.
Translations & copyright
Translations of the Bible are protected by copyright. To keep this game free and unrestricted, Canonicle uses only public-domain translations:
- World English Bible (WEB) โ modern English, dedicated to the public domain by its translators. Default for v1.
- King James Version (KJV) โ public domain in the United States.
A note on cheating: like Redactle, the puzzle text is delivered to your browser. Anyone who inspects the page source can find the answer. The game is a friendly challenge โ please don't.
